What stops us from building creative habits
How's your creative practice going?
Our first weekly accountability check-in is live! This week, I’m inviting you to share how your creative practice or projects have been going and evaluate how you could increase the potency of your participation in these areas.
The best way to build a creative habit is to create an experiment—decide how you want to participate in your creative practice or projects—and check-in regularly with yourself to monitor the results. But most check-ins focus more on what you did and didn't do and fail to address the real reasons we don't show up to our commitments.
It’s less important that you do the thing exactly as you would like to or think you should and more important that you gradually normalize for your inner parts and your nervous system that this new thing is something you do.
You have to make the unfamiliar familiar.
And the more easy and comfortable you can make it to start out, the easier it is. Maybe instead of going from no exercise to doing an entire workout routine, you start with 10 jumping jacks every morning. Instead of trying to do a whole oil painting every week, you do one 5x7” sketch with a travel kit of watercolors on a free day.
Find a starting point that’s easy and convenient and start building muscle memory that this new habit is a thing you actually do.
This check-in exercise is designed to help you evaluate how you can adjust or simplify your experiment so you can transition to the habit you would ultimately like to build. This inquiry is meant to be stupid simple so you have no reason not to show up to it. If you’re feeling light on attention or energy, just focus on questions 2 and 3.
